Can eating pineapple bring on labour?
It may do, but only if you eat lots! Pineapple contains the enzyme bromelain, which is thought to help soften your cervix and bring on labour.
Test-tube experiments using concentrated pineapple extract appear to support this, in theory. But this is very different to eating it in much smaller amounts, so it’s unlikely that it would help to bring on your labour.
One pineapple contains a very small amount of bromelain. You would need to eat as many as eight pineapples for it to have any effect. And the most likely side-effect of eating such large amounts of pineapple would be
indigestionfollowed by a bout of diarrhoea!
